Earlier in January, my eyes started burning when I used the computer. Same thing with the phone.
Could it be that all this screen time is finally catching up with our eyes?
It turns out that many people have been getting unwanted eye problems in the past few years, thus giving birth to Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).
If you’ve been experiencing screen related eye symptoms, in this article I will be talking about what Computer Vision Syndrome actually is, and how to treat yourself back to normal.
What Is Computer Vision Syndrome?
According to WebMD, “CVS is similar to carpal tunnel syndrome and other repetitive motion injuries you might get at work. It happens because your eyes follow the same path over and over. And it can get worse the longer you continue the movement.
When you work at a computer, your eyes have to focus and refocus all the time. They move back and forth as you read. You may have to look down at papers and then back up to type. Your eyes react to changing images on the screen to create so your brain can process what you’re seeing. All these jobs require a lot of effort from your eye muscles. And to make things worse, unlike a book or piece of paper, the screen adds contrast, flicker, and glare.”
The symptoms include burning, redness, itchiness, and a general discomfort when looking at a screen.
I could only use the computer for about 2 hours (while wearing sunglasses), before my eyes would start to burn. And with the phone, I couldn’t even turn it on at all.
If you’re anything like me, this causes a big problem in your life if you can’t use the computer to do work.
For about a week while I was trying to solve this issue, I didn’t know what to do with myself. Screens have become such a big part of our lives, that they are almost essential for survival.
Luckily I did fix this annoying dilemma, and I will now explain the key things I used below.
How To Treat Computer Vision Syndrome
First and foremost, you’re going to want to see an eye doctor to make sure you don’t have any underlying issues with your eyes, and that it is in-fact just an overuse strain.
Then you’re going to have to take a break from screens for as long as your symptoms prevail. I recommend doing outdoor activities and reading books.
And while your eyes are healing, you’re going to need to get a few key products to keep your eyes safe for the future.
Here is what I use listed in order of importance:
I was skeptical at first about computer glasses, but they have really surprised me.
The way they work, is that they come with a yellow tint, which blocks all the blue-light exposure you would normally get while looking at screens.
I got the the most popular brand on the market, GUNNAR, and I’ve been wearing them almost non-stop, even when not on the computer.
My eyes feel much more relaxed, and the yellow color feels a lot more natural to me than normal light.
They have made the biggest difference when it comes to my Computer Vision Syndrome symptoms, and I highly recommend you get a pair if you’re experiencing problems as well.
Flux & Bluelight iPhone Shield
While you’re using the computer glasses, you’re also going to want to change the tint on the screens you use for even more protection.
Flux is the most popular computer app, which matches the color of your computer screen to the color of the room you’re in by detecting sunlight.
They don’t have Flux on phones, so the best option would be to always make sure you use the “Night Shift” setting.
It’s not as good as Flux, so I would also recommend getting a Bluelight iPhone Shield, which will make your phone screen much more safe to look at.
Eye Drops & Eye Bath
This recommendation is pretty obvious, but Eye Drops are super important for making sure your eyes stay fresh and alert.
You should pick up some artificial tears, as well as anti-bacterial eye drops to help with the inflammation of already bothered eyes.
In addition, I just found out about Eye Baths, which are incredibly soothing and make your eyes feel like brand new.
I’m really liking the baths, and do them for about 30 seconds when I wake up and before I go to bed.
Wrist & Elbow Wraps
This last recommendation doesn’t have to do with your eyes, but I am including it due to many people suffering from Computer Vision Syndrome also having wrist and/or elbow pain.
I have had wrist pain while using the computer for a long time, and these wrist wraps have totally changed the game for me.
I also just recently started getting left elbow pain, so I picked up this compression sleeve which has helped out considerably.
Pretty soon we’re going to need protection for our whole body!

Luckily this annoying eye strain can easily be cured, provided you follow the right actions to protect your precious eyes.
I’m actually happy that Computer Vision Syndrome affected me, as it really made me think about how much screen exposure I was receiving on a daily basis.
I now rarely even bring my phone outside, and when I do I keep it in my backpack instead of my pocket.
And at home, I only check my phone briefly instead of using it as a smaller replacement for the computer.
This has made life much more enjoyable, as I was previously a slave to this devil device.
Try limiting your phone intake like I have, and I guarantee you’ll feel much better overall.
